Interesting Find

Interesting find today. As walls began to come off in the kitchen area what looked like potting soil spilled out from where insulation should be.  There’s signs of termite damage in this area and as best as we can guess this was a method to insulate the home without encouraging termites.  The house dates back to the turn of the century.

P.S. Roof work has begun & the neighbors are watching!

In the beginning

Welcome into the story of a neglected worn down home no one wanted or should ever have lived in.  Affectionately known to us as “the flip house” it’s Brian’s winter job. Walk alongside us as we discover the gem of a home she is, redeemed, renewed, transformed.

I’m a thrift store junkie.  Give me a choice to go to the mall or a thrift store and I’ll choose the thrift store every time.  I’ve always been drawn to the thrill of a treasure hunt, finding something unexpected (that I didn’t know I wanted) at a great price.  Something that was discarded and unwanted by someone else becomes a treasure enjoyed by me.  I can relate.  I feel safe in these places.  Like God is reaching out to me, picking me, choosing me, calling me his treasure despite the ugly dents, worn exterior and stains left by the hurts of life.  He redeems them, renews me and my life is transformed.

Well, the flip house is the mother load of thrift stores and I am in heaven!

We purchased the home in the fall.  The bank was selling it for a great price and our offer was the best.  Backstory: If you know us then you know we own and operate a family business called Dorch Landscapes. Brian is a talented landscape designer whose work is amazing! I could go on about him but if you are curious about what he can do to transform yards into outdoor living spaces check out www.dorchlandscapes.com for pictures. Dorch landscapes keeps Brian and two guys really busy from March-November. As the landscape business winds down work on the flip house is in full swing. I’ll be making frequent posts to get you up to speed on where we are at now as the winter winds roll in.

Here’s what we started with…

  • The roof needs replaced.
  • The interior needs totally gutted.
  • The yard has so many weeds you can’t even determine what is actually there!
  • No working utilities
  • The smell. The kids said they couldn’t go in there without throwing up. Without opening the windows EVERY TIME and risking insects fling in (screens need replaced) you couldn’t stay in the house very long.
  • Potential

I think that’s what drew us to the flip house, there is potential.  Brian and I could both see what she could be.

Stay tuned.  More to come.

The Yard

Exterior clean up netted a less neglected look and a visit from the local police!  As Brian & Mike began cleaning up the yard, burning dried debri and wood from the beginning stages of gutting the house the flames got too high.  There was a bit of cajoling because Mike’s idea of a safe fire and Brians were not the same and the curious but kind visit from the local police sided with Brian. The police officer was helpful and gave Brian some needed information to move forward with demo.  Roofing estimate on it’s way.

The back yard, weeds, weeds and more weeds.
